Merrick, 64, Pemiscot county resident for many years, died at St. Joseph Hospital in Memphis last Wednesday, February 17, where he had undergone surgery a few days earlier and few days earlier, the following Friday afternoon at the H.S. Smith Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Floyd V. Brower officiated and burial was in Little Prairie cemetery. Mr. Merrick was born in a small community known as Rabbit Hash in Kentucky on May 14, 1895, the son of Elijah and Mary Josephine Merrick, and the family moved to Pemiscot county when he was 15 years old. He enlisted in the Army on July 25, 1918 during World War I, and served until January 24, 1919, when he received his discharge at Camp Funston, Kas.. He was a member of the Methodist Church. In Paragould, Arkansas, on August ?, 1917, he was married to Miss Clara Austin and for several years past Mr. and Mrs. Merrick have operated a grocery and filling station at the "Wye" on Highway 61 west of this city. Survivors other than his wife include two sons, B.J. Merrick Jr. of Wausau, Wis. and Reginald Merrick of Sikeston; a daughter, Mrs. Marvin Martin of Livermore, Calif.; three brothers, Stanley Merrick, Greenfield, Ia., Paul, Caruthersville and Ben Merrick, Arniston, Missouri. She grew up in Lorena and Mullen, Texas, and graduated salutatorian from Mullen High School in 1942. She worked for the United Way for 21 years as the Associate Executive Director. Dorothy was a member of Richfield Christian Church in Waco, a 38-year member of the American Business Women's Association, the Lorena Eastern Star and the Lorena Cemetery Association. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Joe Driskell and Bob Behringer; daughter, Virginia Swanson; grandddaughter, Lauren Kincer; and sisters, Catherine Copeland and Tommie Sue Boykin. She is survived by her daughters, Debbie Kincer and husband, Steve, of Waco, and Nancy Rich and husband, Scot, of Corpus Christi; son-in-law, John J. 218	Birth: Sep. 23, 1804 New York, USA Death: Nov. 9, 1881 DeWitt County Texas, USA DICKINSON. Dr. Samuel Burling Dickinson was a resident of DeWitt County sometime in the Republic years prior to 1842. He was a descendant of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley came over on the Mayflower, born in central New York State and educated as a medical doctor there at Fairfield University. His predominantly Quaker family had resided at Oyster Bay on Long Island for nearly 200 years. In search of adventure as a young man, he came all the way down the Mississippi from New York State to the Fayette county area of Mississippi in the early 1830's to practice medicine among the planter gentry in that region. At 6 feet 3 inches tall, he met his bride, Caroline Kinnison, who was only 4 feet 10 inche, the daughter of a plantation owner who had settled there during Spanish rule.. Dr. Sam resided in the vicinity of the Homochitto River near Natchez when he encountered the widely reported passions of the Texians in the Mississippi Valley. Free Texas land was advertised in handbills for those who would serve the revolution. Though his young wife was with child in 1835, he signed onto a schooner at New Orleans headed to Texas to offer his services to the cause of Texian independence. The letter that he penned aboard the schooner Lively was reminiscent of his ancestors compact concerning their intentions in the new world. Upon arrival at Brazoria, Dr. Sam met with Stephen F. Austin, William Wharton and Branch Archer who decided to send him and a Mr. J.M. Wolfe back east to raise funds for the independence effort. Dickinson was apparently the secretary of the group, and was one of the first medical doctors to reach Velasco in December 1835. Dr. Sam met with Austin in Philadelphia and perhaps again in New York. He is believed to have recruited men for Fannin's army in New Orleans and brought them back to Texas to fight signing a pact with them on board ship to fight for the Republic. It is unclear how successful he was as a fundraiser, but in early 1836 he was granted a parcel of land in Brazoria. However, he moved to the southern Dewitt colony/Lavaca county area between old Clinton on the Guadalupe River and Sweet Home/Hallettsville. When the Native war whoop came down the Guadalupe Valley in 1842 and with the threat of a new Mexican invasion, he took Caroline and his family to Austin County where he bought 400 acres of land from Jared Groce near Hempstead. He soon pulled up stakes and moved to east Texas at Marshall where he bought land and helped found the First Methodist Church. He hired attorney Isaac Van Zandt to try to recover his promised expenses from Texas for his fundraising travels back east. H may have gotten some compensation ($300) about 1856 from the State. After returning to DeWitt County in about 1847, he lived around Sweet Home and Hallettsville into the late 1850's when he purchased a ranch between Terryville and Yoakum. He was a circuit rider preacher and may have run for political office in the late 1850's. Dr. Sam died about 1881 and was buried at the Hebron cemetery at old Terryville. His wife, Caroline, lived until 1926 and being the oldest person in Texas when she died at age 107 and was buried at the County Line Cemetery (north of Terryville) on land donated by the Dickinsons. The old Dickinson ranch immediately east of the County Line cemetery was still owned by the Dickinson family in the mid 1990's. The Dickinsons had more than 10 children and left many descendants. At Terryville, the Goodes, Hargroves, Greenes, Davises and many other old families were among kinfolk and friends. Dr. Sam's son, Preston buried at Hebron served in the Confederate service at Fort Esperanza south of Port Lavaca and then moved to action in Galveston when the Yankees advanced up the coast. I recently pulled out the Confederate Pension Application of Widow M. F. Smith of McLennan County, Texas. Background: Martha Francis Chapman was born 28 August 1837 in Houston County, Texas to Robert D. Chapman and his wife, Rebecca Hodges. Robert D. Chapman is one of my DRT (Daughters of the Republic of Texas) proven ancestors. Martha married Littleton Smith in 1857. The 1860 census lists Littleton as "Leticia" Smith along with Martha and their two oldest girls. In 1850 he had been listed alone in nearby Rusk County, age 18 and born in South Carolina. Now there were some Littleton Smith's in South Carolina but they are pretty well documented and don't fit the criteria for my Littleton but I keep them in mind. Smith is a hard name to research so you tend to keep other Smiths in mind but you can't know for sure if they are related. No other Smiths appeared to have moved with Littleton between 1850 and 1860. Other researchers have left information with the LDS church listing him as Robert Lilton Smith. In 1870 he is enumerated as Lewis Smith but with the correct family members. In 1880 he is listed in McLennan County, Texas as L. Smith, a horse breeder, with the same family. So that pretty much sums up the brick wall on my Smith line. I spent a little time earlier in the day on Ancestry.com today to see if anything had popped up on my Smith line. I noticed a couple of other Littleton Smiths I didn't remember seeing before but nothing really stuck out. But back to the pension application - Martha is named as the widow of L. S. Smith throughout the document but in one place that I had apparently not been able to decipher earlier, he is named as Littleton Spivy Smith. It's hard to read the handwriting but this time it made total sense because Littleton Spivey Smith was one of those individuals I noticed on Ancestry today. Well, it turned out that my Littleton Spivy Smith (born ca 1832 in SC) is not the same Littleton Spivey Smith (born 1819 in GA) that is in Ancestry. I could find nothing to help me but I am one step closer than I was yesterday and that made my day. CONFEDERATE TEXAS TROOPS 28th Regiment, Texas Cavalry (Randal's) (1st Texas Lancers) Company D Randal’s Regiment Enlisted June 11, 1862 at Crockett, Texas by H. G. McDaniel From Aug 13 to Sept 1 Pvt Smith was near Littlerock, Arkansas. Working as a Teamster For pay from Sept 1st to Nov 17th and travel from Camp Nelson Ark to Crockett Texas. On November 17, 1862 Pvt Smith was medically discharged. Overview: 28th Cavalry Regiment was organized during the late spring of 1862 by Colonel H. Randal. It was formed with about 1,000 men and twelve companies, but one company was transferred to the 19th Texas Infantry Regiment in mid-1864. Some of its members were from Fairfield and Shelby Counties. The unit was soon dismounted and assigned to Polignac's, Randal's, and Maclay's Brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department, and was active in various conflicts in Louisiana and Arkansas. It saw some hard fighting at Mansfield and Pleasant Hill, then fought at Jenkins' Ferry. The 28th disbanded prior to the surrender in June, 1865. The field officers were Colonels Eli H. Baxter and Horace Randal, Lieutenant Colonel Henry G. Hall, and Major Patrick Henry. Littleton moved just north of Masterville (Note: Mr. Cox was appointed the second Postmaster of Bruceville. The Town was then called Masterville, but after the completion of the Mississippi, Kansas & Texas railroad it was changed to Bruceville. 225	Born in Kentucky, April 16, 1815. He came to Texas in February, 1830, as is stated in the Headright Certificate issued to him January 5, 1838 for one-third of a league of land by the Fayette County Board. He was a member of Captain Jesse Billingsley's company of "Mina Volunteers" at San Jacinto and on February 7, 1840 was issued Donation Certificate No. 1019 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle. He received Bounty Certificate No. 9818 for 3250 acres of land for having served in the army from September 28 to December 13, 1835, and Bounty Certificate No. 3408 for 320 acres of land for his services from March 27 to June 27, 1836. Mr. Criswell was married to Mary E. Michin (McMicken)at La Grange, February 3, 1842. Mr. Criswell died January 19, 1858 and was buried on the Kubena farm one mile southeast of Praha, Fayette County, in a marked grave. In 1936, Mr. Criswell's body was removed and reintered in the State Cemetery at Austin. It was noted at time of exhumation, that his bones were still intact, due to the fact that his wife had his original grave lined with limestone. It's probably well and good that William was moved to Austin, as the rest of the Criswell Cemetery on the Kubena farm, has all but been distroyed. Children of Mr. and Mrs. Criswell were: Bettie, who married Calvin Jones; Sallie E., who married Simmie Lee; Mollie, who married James Lyons; John H., who married Josie Jones; James Yancy, who married Aedelie Burks and Lillie Criswell, who married John Waddell. Member Lyons (Masonic) Lodge No. 195. One of William Vanoy Criswell's descendants, Mrs. Billie Beth Moore was instrumental in helping to create the "San Jacinto Descendants", a heriditary organization set up to perpetuate the memory of all San Jacinto Veterans . William Vannoy Criswell, a San Jacinto hero serving in Captain Jesse Billingsley's Company under Colonel Edward Burleson's 1st Regiment know as the Mina Volunteers, later as Company C. His name appears on the bronze plaque inside the San Jacinto Monument at the Battlefield. He was buried in the Criswell Cemetery located on his land 1/2 mile east of his home, on the north side of Mulberry Creek. At one time this was a large cemetery. About 1935, the man who owned the land where the cemetery was located broke down all the stones except two and hauled them away. Houston Wade found out about it and the man was fined a large sum of money. The Criswell Cemetery has been plowed under now and William Criswell's remains were moved to the State Cemetery in Austin. Williams tombstone was a double stone with one side inscribed: "An old Texas Veteran. The Cross is my Ancor". The opposite side is inscribed "Sarah E. Lee, nee Criswell, Asleep in Jesus" along with her dates. William V.'s body was then removed to Austin and placed in the "Republic of Texas" part of the State Cemetery. A number of relatives and descendants attended this reburial ceremony in 1936, including a ggggrandson, Leon Harlan Ivy, who received special mention. William V. is bried opposite the grave of another Fayette County man, Joel W. Robison, one of the five men who captured Santa Anna. Next to Joel's grave is a marker telling of the capture. The other 4 captors were James A. Sylvester, Joseph D. Vermillion, Alfred H. Miles and David Cole. Captain Jesse Billingsley and Rev. Z.N. Morrell are buried nearby. On January 10, 1677, the County Court, in session at Northampton, ordered a new prison and house of correction to be built in Springfield, at an expense as near £50 as was possible and not more than £55. Major Pynchon selected a site on Main street, on the west side, where the hotel called the Union House was later built. It was a building of two stories, twenty-five by eighteen feet. One room, with several closets, occupied all of the first floor, and on the second floor were three rooms. The walls and the partitions between the rooms, were of very heavy oak planks, and although such a prison would easily be broken by the skilled mechanics who belong to the criminal class of this century, it was then regarded as being entirely satisfactory and safe. For many years this was the only place of confinement in the county, for the great variety of offenders who were declared to be criminals by the queer laws of those days, and it was the place of confinement for the southern part of the county for 114 years. No deed to the property was given by Samuel Ely or by Thomas Merrick, from whom it was purchased by Major Pynchon for the county, till 1683, and 1684, respectively. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, J.A. "Mike" Mirick, of Lorena.

Peggy is survived by her children, Karen and husband, William Mosley, of New Braunfels, Rick Mirick, of Madison, Miss., and Robin Mirick, of Longview; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Jack Newell, of Search Light, Nev.; and extended family members and many friends.

B.J. Merrick, 64, Pemiscot county resident for many years, died at St. Joseph Hospital in Memphis last Wednesday, February 17, where he had undergone surgery a few days earlier and few days earlier, the following Friday afternoon at the H.S. Smith Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Floyd V. Brower officiated and burial was in Little Prairie cemetery.
Mr. Merrick was born in a small community known as Rabbit Hash in Kentucky on May 14, 1895, the son of Elijah and Mary Josephine Merrick, and the family moved to Pemiscot county when he was 15 years old.
He enlisted in the Army on July 25, 1918 during World War I, and served until January 24, 1919, when he received his discharge at Camp Funston, Kas.. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
In Paragould, Arkansas, on August ?, 1917, he was married to Miss Clara Austin and for several years past Mr. and Mrs. Merrick have operated a grocery and filling station at the "Wye" on Highway 61 west of this city.
Survivors other than his wife include two sons, B.J. Merrick Jr. of Wausau, Wis. and Reginald Merrick of Sikeston; a daughter, Mrs. Marvin Martin of Livermore, Calif.; three brothers, Stanley Merrick, Greenfield, Ia., Paul, Caruthersville and Ben Merrick, Arniston, Missouri.
Also three sisters survive; Mrs. Lelia Crecelius, East Prairie, Missouri, Mrs. Carl Austin, St. Louis, and Mrs. Noel Pike, Charleston, Missouri; also four grandchildren.

Mrs. Clara Austin Merrick, 82, of Caruthersville, died Saturday at Pemiscot County Memorial Hospital. Born Oct. 19, 1901 in Pemiscot County, she was the daughter of John and Betty Story Austin. She attended the Chapel School and later became a member of the Maplewood faculty.
She was the widow of Bernard James Merrick. She and her husband formerly operated Merrick Store at the "Y" West of Caruthersville. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 465 and Eastwood Memorial United Methodist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. June Martin of Livermore, Calif.; Five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two sons, B.J. and Reginold Merrick.
Services were Monday at 2 p m. at H.S. Smith Funeral Home chapel in Caruthersville, the Rev. Allen Vancil officiating, with burial in Little Prairie Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Lawrence Pounder, Roy Bell, Edgar Boehme, Ben Burns, Tom Hill and Albert Milligan.

Dorothy Driskell Behringer, 84, of Waco, passed away Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 at St. Catherine's Center. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, at Wilkirson-Hatch Bailey Chapel with the Rev. David Story officiating. Burial will follow at Lorena Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey.

Dorothy was born in Lorena, Texas, to the late Thomas and Merle Copeland. She grew up in Lorena and Mullen, Texas, and graduated salutatorian from Mullen High School in 1942. She worked for the United Way for 21 years as the Associate Executive Director. Dorothy was a member of Richfield Christian Church in Waco, a 38-year member of the American Business Women's Association, the Lorena Eastern Star and the Lorena Cemetery Association.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Joe Driskell and Bob Behringer; daughter, Virginia Swanson; grandddaughter, Lauren Kincer; and sisters, Catherine Copeland and Tommie Sue Boykin.

She is survived by her daughters, Debbie Kincer and husband, Steve, of Waco, and Nancy Rich and husband, Scot, of Corpus Christi; son-in-law, John J. Swanson, of Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Margaret Ann Swanson-Abendschien, Suzan Swanson, Melissa Linendoll, Jennifer Querrey and Jeffrey Atwell; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Frances Mirick, of Waco; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are Jeffrey Atwell, John Querry, Bryan Mirick, Doyle Bood, Jim McKethan and Steve Atwell. Honorary Pallbearers are Don, Randy and Bill Behringer.

A special loving thank you is expressed to St. Catherine's Hospice Staff for sharing in her journey.

DICKINSON. Dr. Samuel Burling Dickinson was a resident of DeWitt County sometime in the Republic years prior to 1842. He was a descendant of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley came over on the Mayflower, born in central New York State and educated as a medical doctor there at Fairfield University. His predominantly Quaker family had resided at Oyster Bay on Long Island for nearly 200 years. In search of adventure as a young man, he came all the way down the Mississippi from New York State to the Fayette county area of Mississippi in the early 1830's to practice medicine among the planter gentry in that region. At 6 feet 3 inches tall, he met his bride, Caroline Kinnison, who was only 4 feet 10 inche, the daughter of a plantation owner who had settled there during Spanish rule.. Dr. Sam resided in the vicinity of the Homochitto River near Natchez when he encountered the widely reported passions of the Texians in the Mississippi Valley. Free Texas land was advertised in handbills for those who would serve the revolution. Though his young wife was with child in 1835, he signed onto a schooner at New Orleans headed to Texas to offer his services to the cause of Texian independence. The letter that he penned aboard the schooner Lively was reminiscent of his ancestors compact concerning their intentions in the new world.

Upon arrival at Brazoria, Dr. Sam met with Stephen F. Austin, William Wharton and Branch Archer who decided to send him and a Mr. J.M. Wolfe back east to raise funds for the independence effort. Dickinson was apparently the secretary of the group, and was one of the first medical doctors to reach Velasco in December 1835. Dr. Sam met with Austin in Philadelphia and perhaps again in New York. He is believed to have recruited men for Fannin's army in New Orleans and brought them back to Texas to fight signing a pact with them on board ship to fight for the Republic. It is unclear how successful he was as a fundraiser, but in early 1836 he was granted a parcel of land in Brazoria. However, he moved to the southern Dewitt colony/Lavaca county area between old Clinton on the Guadalupe River and Sweet Home/Hallettsville. When the Native war whoop came down the Guadalupe Valley in 1842 and with the threat of a new Mexican invasion, he took Caroline and his family to Austin County where he bought 400 acres of land from Jared Groce near Hempstead. He soon pulled up stakes and moved to east Texas at Marshall where he bought land and helped found the First Methodist Church. He hired attorney Isaac Van Zandt to try to recover his promised expenses from Texas for his fundraising travels back east. H may have gotten some compensation ($300) about 1856 from the State. After returning to DeWitt County in about 1847, he lived around Sweet Home and Hallettsville into the late 1850's when he purchased a ranch between Terryville and Yoakum. He was a circuit rider preacher and may have run for political office in the late 1850's. Dr. Sam died about 1881 and was buried at the Hebron cemetery at old Terryville. His wife, Caroline, lived until 1926 and being the oldest person in Texas when she died at age 107 and was buried at the County Line Cemetery (north of Terryville) on land donated by the Dickinsons. The old Dickinson ranch immediately east of the County Line cemetery was still owned by the Dickinson family in the mid 1990's. The Dickinsons had more than 10 children and left many descendants. At Terryville, the Goodes, Hargroves, Greenes, Davises and many other old families were among kinfolk and friends. Dr. Sam's son, Preston buried at Hebron served in the Confederate service at Fort Esperanza south of Port Lavaca and then moved to action in Galveston when the Yankees advanced up the coast. He contracted pneumonia and lasted only a couple of years after the war. Information from Jim Skelton, 2nd greatgrandson of Preston Dickinson.

Littleton Smith Pension

When confronted with a brick wall during your ancestry search, sometimes it pays to reread documents that were collected years earlier. I recently pulled out the Confederate Pension Application of Widow M. F. Smith of McLennan County, Texas.

Background: Martha Francis Chapman was born 28 August 1837 in Houston County, Texas to Robert D. Chapman and his wife, Rebecca Hodges. Robert D. Chapman is one of my DRT (Daughters of the Republic of Texas) proven ancestors. Martha married Littleton Smith in 1857. The 1860 census lists Littleton as "Leticia" Smith along with Martha and their two oldest girls. In 1850 he had been listed alone in nearby Rusk County, age 18 and born in South Carolina.

Now there were some Littleton Smith's in South Carolina but they are pretty well documented and don't fit the criteria for my Littleton but I keep them in mind. Smith is a hard name to research so you tend to keep other Smiths in mind but you can't know for sure if they are related. No other Smiths appeared to have moved with Littleton between 1850 and 1860. Other researchers have left information with the LDS church listing him as Robert Lilton Smith. In 1870 he is enumerated as Lewis Smith but with the correct family members. In 1880 he is listed in McLennan County, Texas as L. Smith, a horse breeder, with the same family. So that pretty much sums up the brick wall on my Smith line.

I spent a little time earlier in the day on Ancestry.com today to see if anything had popped up on my Smith line. I noticed a couple of other Littleton Smiths I didn't remember seeing before but nothing really stuck out.

But back to the pension application - Martha is named as the widow of L. S. Smith throughout the document but in one place that I had apparently not been able to decipher earlier, he is named as Littleton Spivy Smith. It's hard to read the handwriting but this time it made total sense because Littleton Spivey Smith was one of those individuals I noticed on Ancestry today.

Well, it turned out that my Littleton Spivy Smith (born ca 1832 in SC) is not the same Littleton Spivey Smith (born 1819 in GA) that is in Ancestry. I could find nothing to help me but I am one step closer than I was yesterday and that made my day.

Overview: 28th Cavalry Regiment was organized during the late spring of 1862 by Colonel H. Randal. It was formed with about 1,000 men and twelve companies, but one company was transferred to the 19th Texas Infantry Regiment in mid-1864. Some of its members were from Fairfield and Shelby Counties. The unit was soon dismounted and assigned to Polignac's, Randal's, and Maclay's Brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department, and was active in various conflicts in Louisiana and Arkansas. It saw some hard fighting at Mansfield and Pleasant Hill, then fought at Jenkins' Ferry. The 28th disbanded prior to the surrender in June, 1865. The field officers were Colonels Eli H. Baxter and Horace Randal, Lieutenant Colonel Henry G. Hall, and Major Patrick Henry.

Littleton moved just north of Masterville (Note: Mr. Cox was appointed the second Postmaster of Bruceville. The Town was then called Masterville, but after the completion of the Mississippi, Kansas & Texas railroad it was changed to Bruceville. Later the name was changed to Cow Bayou, afterward to Masterville, Finally, in 1888, to Bruceville,

Born in Kentucky, April 16, 1815. He came to Texas in February, 1830, as is stated in the Headright Certificate issued to him January 5, 1838 for one-third of a league of land by the Fayette County Board. He was a member of Captain Jesse Billingsley's company of "Mina Volunteers" at San Jacinto and on February 7, 1840 was issued Donation Certificate No. 1019 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle. He received Bounty Certificate No. 9818 for 3250 acres of land for having served in the army from September 28 to December 13, 1835, and Bounty Certificate No. 3408 for 320 acres of land for his services from March 27 to June 27, 1836.

Mr. Criswell was married to Mary E. Michin (McMicken)at La Grange, February 3, 1842. Mr. Criswell died January 19, 1858 and was buried on the Kubena farm one mile southeast of Praha, Fayette County, in a marked grave. In 1936, Mr. Criswell's body was removed and reintered in the State Cemetery at Austin. It was noted at time of exhumation, that his bones were still intact, due to the fact that his wife had his original grave lined with limestone. It's probably well and good that William was moved to Austin, as the rest of the Criswell Cemetery on the Kubena farm, has all but been distroyed.

Children of Mr. and Mrs. Criswell were: Bettie, who married Calvin Jones; Sallie E., who married Simmie Lee; Mollie, who married James Lyons; John H., who married Josie Jones; James Yancy, who married Aedelie Burks and Lillie Criswell, who married John Waddell.

One of William Vanoy Criswell's descendants, Mrs. Billie Beth Moore was instrumental in helping to create the "San Jacinto Descendants", a heriditary organization set up to perpetuate the memory of all San Jacinto Veterans .

William Vannoy Criswell, a San Jacinto hero serving in Captain Jesse Billingsley's Company under Colonel Edward Burleson's 1st Regiment know as the Mina Volunteers, later as Company C. His name appears on the bronze plaque inside the San Jacinto Monument at the Battlefield. He was buried in the Criswell Cemetery located on his land 1/2 mile east of his home, on the north side of Mulberry Creek. At one time this was a large cemetery. About 1935, the man who owned the land where the cemetery was located broke down all the stones except two and hauled them away. Houston Wade found out about it and the man was fined a large sum of money.

The Criswell Cemetery has been plowed under now and William Criswell's remains were moved to the State Cemetery in Austin. Williams tombstone was a double stone with one side inscribed: "An old Texas Veteran. The Cross is my Ancor". The opposite side is inscribed "Sarah E. Lee, nee Criswell, Asleep in Jesus" along with her dates.

William V.'s body was then removed to Austin and placed in the "Republic of Texas" part of the State Cemetery. A number of relatives and descendants attended this reburial ceremony in 1936, including a ggggrandson, Leon Harlan Ivy, who received special mention. William V. is bried opposite the grave of another Fayette County man, Joel W. Robison, one of the five men who captured Santa Anna. Next to Joel's grave is a marker telling of the capture. The other 4 captors were James A. Sylvester, Joseph D. Vermillion, Alfred H. Miles and David Cole. Captain Jesse Billingsley and Rev. Z.N. Morrell are buried nearby.

William Vannoy Criswell is buried in the State Cemetery at Austin, Harris County, Texas, in

Section: Republic Hill Section 1, Row U, Number 7.

Springfield
After the destruction of the jail, or prison, when Springfield was burned by Indians in 1675, there was no place in the county for the confinement of prisoners and it must be remembered that till 1730, Hampshire County included nearly all of western Massachusetts. On January 10, 1677, the County Court, in session at Northampton, ordered a new prison and house of correction to be built in Springfield, at an expense as near £50 as was possible and not more than £55. Major Pynchon selected a site on Main street, on the west side, where the hotel called the Union House was later built. It was a building of two stories, twenty-five by eighteen feet. One room, with several closets, occupied all of the first floor, and on the second floor were three rooms. The walls and the partitions between the rooms, were of very heavy oak planks, and although such a prison would easily be broken by the skilled mechanics who belong to the criminal class of this century, it was then regarded as being entirely satisfactory and safe. For many years this was the only place of confinement in the county, for the great variety of offenders who were declared to be criminals by the queer laws of those days, and it was the place of confinement for the southern part of the county for 114 years. No deed to the property was given by Samuel Ely or by Thomas Merrick, from whom it was purchased by Major Pynchon for the county, till 1683, and 1684, respectively. The house for the jail-keeper stood on the same lot with the jail.

The Sarah Mirricke/Myrick who married John Atkinson (1636-1715) in Newbury did so in 1664 [Torrey; Newbury VR 2:20 (John Atkins/Attkinson and Sara Mirricke)], not 1646, and thus is unlikely to be a sister to Thomas.
