3	Here is the obit for Rev. John L. Brown (Sarah Alonzia Elizabeth Rogers Madewell's grandfather, A.W.'s wife): This is from the Christian Advocate: Rev. John L. Brown fell asleep in Jesus December 12, 1898 at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Jackson and Eliza T. Brown, near Richland, Navarro County, Tex., where he has been living for the last six years. He was born in Warren county, Tenn., May 5, 1809. He professed religion and joined the M.E.Church, South, at seventeen years of age. At the age of twenty-eight he was licensed to preach, under the presiding eldership of Rev. John Sherrell; was ordained deacon October 17, 1852, by Bishop Joshua Soule, at Pulaski, Tenn; and elder October 24, 1858, by Bishop James Osgood Andrew, at McMinnville, Tenn. He preached for about forty-seven years, and was faithful to all the doctrines and usages of Methodism. Though local, he would often relieve the preachers in charge and go their rounds, while they went home or were sick. In revivals he went far and near. He never fled before the enemy. His preaching was plain, earnest, and practical. Anything that he could not adjust to the word of God was with him but chaff. He was a great lover of the CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE. He was married to Sarah Taylor. To them were born thirteen children. All but four have preceded him. His wife preceded him by ten years to the good world. His firstborn still survives him, though sixty-odd years old. He has thirty-six great-grandchildren, the most of whom live in Texas, where he died. His daughter Eliza and her husband endeavored to make his life pleasant and happy. He offtimes expressed his delight with Texas and the tender care for him the last six years of his life. Often would he say that there was but one thing that troubled him, that was he would rather be buried by his wife at Beech Grove in Alabama. That made but little difference, as he would be with her in heaven. He loved the Texas preachers: Brothers M.B. McKinney, F.M. Winburn, G.J. Irving and others. Our present preacher he never saw, but he held an impressive service at the grave. On the night of his departure, about one o'clock, he held out his hand, and said: "Good-by; don't grieve after me. I am going to a better home over yonder." A few minutes before the last he rose up in bed and told his daughter to fix him a soft pillow to die on. She adjusted the pillow, he lay down on the edge of it, and in a moment said, "Now, Lord, take me easy." and his life was gone. Not a struggle, not a frown; all was over. "Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his." We, his children, who have cared for him in his last years, want to say to his many friends and relatives, especially in Tennessee, that if we ever meet him again we will have to live in this life above reproach. Their first child Wm. Lafayette was born 1837 in Hardeman Co., TN., d.1906. By 1839 James and Salina had gone to Tippah Co., MS where they may have had a son John W. b.1839 d.1850. Also in Tippah Co. they had children Robert M. 1841-?; Mary "Mollie" Charlesann 1844-1911; Sarah Etter 1847-1921; and Emily, b.1849, d.bef.1860. In 1851, the Carters went to Webberville, Travis County, TX where they had the following children: Amanda Roxanna, b.1851-1852, d.1917; Anna Bell 1854-1925; James "Buck" 1856-1930; and Missie Lena 1859-1907. In the late 1860s, James and Salina moved to Waco. All of their grown children also moved to the general Waco area at about that same time. By 1880 James and Salina were living west of Crawford near Tonk Creek. In 1851 they moved to Webberville, Travis Co. TX, on the Colorado River. at 30°13'51.76"N and 97°30'59.99"W. The 1851 date is supported by Travis County tax records and by a biography of the husband of one of their daughters in an 1892 book. The 1892 source also states that James Carter was a deputy sheriff in Webberville. About 1869 they moved to McLennan County. In 1870 they lived in the town of Waco. By 1880 they had moved southwest of Waco near the Coryell line. The specific community may have been known as Tonk Creek. Their property was just yards southwest of where Tonk Creek crosses High Bridge Road in western McLennan County. Per the census, he may have been born in North Carolina, South Carolina or Alabama. The 1880 census says he was born in NC and that his parents were born in Virginia. In 1836, Greenberry Carter was the bondsman on James' marriage record in Hardeman County, Tennessee (Note: Greenberry Carter was a son of Jesse Carter of Hardeman Co., Tenn. I do not believe Greenberry was James' father, since G.B. later named another son James. Also, G.B. was too young to have been married when James was born). James married Salina Roxanna Dean April 27, 1836 in Hardeman Co., Tenn. Their first child, William L. Carter, was born there in April 1837. By 1839 they had moved to Tippah County, Mississippi (Greenberry Carter also went to Tippah County). A child John W. Carter may have been born to James and Salina in 1839 in Tippah County. He died in 1850; do not know for certain that he was their child. Although his origins remain elusive, he was definitely located at Biggin in Derbyshire by the 1520s. In the eighteenth year of Henry VIII (1526/7), Henry Brownlow sued William Hall concerning “a commison and evidence of title to lands called the Hallfeld.” The land was located at “Byggyng” near Duffield, Derbyshire.[1] Undoubtedly, the issue with the Halls continued for quite some time as William Hall sued Henry Brownlow in the twenty-eighth year of Henry VIII (1536/7) for “forcible entry and tortuous possession of lands and paster” in Hallfeld.[2] Holy Trinity Church, Kirk Ireton, Derbyshire Henry Brownlow made his will in 1539, and he requested his “Body to be beryed in the church … att kyrkyreton.” From his will, we know his wife’s name was Margaret. She outlived Henry Brownlow and later married Robert Hetheley. Henry Brownlow died in 1539, sometime before October 2 when his estate was inventoried. Based on his will, he was the father of: 1. Robert Brownlow was born about 1508. He died about 1570 in Horsley, Derbyshire. He married Maud. 2. Alan Brownlow was born about 1510. He died about 1549 in London. 3. Thomas Brownlow of Duffield was born about 1512. He died after 1585. 4. William Brownlow of Kirk Ireton was born about 1515. He died in October 1597 in Wirksworth, Derbyshire. He was buried on 1 November 1597 in Kirk Ireton, Derbyshire. He married Elizabeth. She died in 1601 in Kirk Ireton, Derbyshire. 5. Mayor John Brownlow of Nottingham was born about 1517. He died in September 1592 in Nottingham, England. John Brownlow and Anne Roper were married about 1542. Anne Roper, daughter of Thomas Roper and Partridge, was born about 1522. 15	Granny Rose Allen Moses "Mose" and Rosie "Grannie" Allen were the parents of Robert Fleming Allen , and the grandparents of his daughter and my grandmother Sarah Ella Allen. He was their only son. Moses was wounded in the Civil War and later died from those wounds in 1902. Rosie was born in 1837 and died in 1931. They came to North Texas from Mississippi in 1890, and Moses died 12 years later. From Cheryl Williams They actually came via South Carolina: Moses was first known to have been in Monroe County, Georgia in 1850 with his mother Nancy, and his brothers Greenberry (or Green B), Redmond & Jefferson. In all the recorded census records, it says he was born in South Carolina. As you look at Rosanna (Rosie's) lineage, you will see that although it says she was born in GA, her parents were from SC, and they can be traced particularly to Chester County South Carolina. This is where it gets interesting.... I found (via Maryland Genealogical) a very old and much over looked manuscript of an Equity Court Case in Chester County SC which named the decendants & heirs of a Richard Allen ca 1735 - 1806. There were names in about 16 pages of the worst handwriting ever decyphered in the whole history of Earth. I would have never looked at Chester County SC ever had it not been for the clerk at the archives in Maryland..... There were the names of Richard's heirs, some of whom were trying to claim their part of the land which he gave son Elisha who had since died. In it were named the following children: Barnett Allen, James, John, Isaac, William, Chesley, Elijah, Sarah (Sally), Frances, & Nancy - as well as some of their children. Some had died, some had moved "west" and were not heard from since. The date on this record was 1846, and I have to assume the year that Richard's son, Elijah had died. Chesley was noted to have left the area, leaving his son Emanual. Saying all of this an heir of Emanuel and an heir from Moses exactly match markers in their yDNA samples. Closer than kin than the cousins I know that we are 100% kin to, simply because we visited and broke bread together back in the 1970's...... Anyway, not to get side tracked, I got very excited to find this information, but have not succeeded in getting any other family interested except for the Cassles family, which one of the Allen girls (Frances) married Benjamin Cassles (Castles). Many people on the internet have placed a very strange but undocumented name as Benjamin's wife. Strange but true. I haven't figured out yet why folks post undocumented stuff, and strangely yet why people believe it..... The connection to Chester County SC was the clenching deal, BUT which son that Nancy was married to remains to be proven. She may have been a daughter-in-law named in the Equity Court Case (Nancy) but I do not believe that is the case, as she (that particular Nancy) was named as Nancy Nabors (Neighbors) in the case. The mother to Moses was definitely Nancy Allen. Here is the Reader's Digest condensed version of Richard's Will, and (some) of the Equity Court case: Richard Allen died about 1806 and left a will - transcribed below: In the name of God Amen I Richard Allen of the State of South Carolina & District of Chester being weak in body but of Sound mind and blessed blessed be God do this Seventh Day of March in the Year of our Lord 1806 make and publish this my last will and testament in manner following that is to say first I give and bequeath to my Eldest Son John the sum of five Shillings and no more, Item I give and bequeath to My Son Elijah all the land I am now posessed of Item I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Mary and Children vis Isaac, Barnet, William, Chesly, Elijah, James, Francis, Nancy, and Sarah, all my personal Estate to be equally divided between them after my just debts are paid & I make Constitute and ordain my trusty friends Christopher Nabors & Benjamin Castels, to be My Executors in trust for my Estate In witness thereof I the said Richard Allen have to this my last will and testament Set My hand and Seal this 7th March, 1806 --------------------------------------------------------------- John must have been a scoundrel (my 5th ggfather is John) and he got 5 Shillings - Elijah must have been the brains of the family..... Then Elijah must have died and then the surviving heirs of Richard petitioned the courts for the land to be appraised, sold, and divided. This is the short version: John Allen had moved to AL and had not been heard of since. James had moved from the state - no heirs listed. Chesley was the father of Emanuel. Chesley moved to either TN or KY about 1815 and took his family except for Emanuel, and had not been heard of since. Barnett Allen removed to some Western States about 1810 and they have not heard from him since. Barnett Sr is the father of Barnett Jr who is listed as a plaintiff James Allen removed from the state and has not been heard from since. Isaac died about 1820 leaving the following children: Richard, Charity, Mary, Barnett, William, Isaac, James and Francis. Mary married Tillman Whitehead and he abandoned her. Francis married Berry Hardin and moved west. Sally Allen married William Rogers and he abandoned her and left the state. I am not sure about William - I'm sure that he was described in part that was unreadable. I hope this is enlightening and usable in your search for your ancestors. Hookerville was on the banks of Hooker Creek on the edge of the Blackland Prairie six miles west of Caldwell, Texas in western Burleson County. Settlement in the county north of the Old San Antonio Road began in the late 1830s. During the 1850s the family of John W. Porter established an extensive plantation on a tributary of Hooker Creek; it became the nucleus of a community called Porter's Chapel. A sawmill operated on Hooker Creek during the early phases of settlement. After the Civil War the Porter's Chapel community became known as Hookerville-named, as was the nearby creek, for an early settler. A post office operated there from 1878 until 1912, after which mail was routed through Chriesman. In 1885 Hookerville reported a population of 130 and a school, a church, a gristmill, and a cotton gin. The town was bypassed by State Highway 21 and the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway. In the late 1980s the Porters Chapel and cemetery and the Liberty Church were still in the area. At this time I am looking for Porter's Chapel/cemetery. In 2002, Calvin and Margaret moved to Alamogordo where they knew it would be their forever home. Calvin enjoyed volleyball and was an avid sports fan. His love was his wife and the life they lived. He delighted in his RV'ing and traveling the country. His serenity was a cup of coffee and watching the sunrise and sunset from his porch. Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Alamogordo, sister, Joann Chesser of Trinity, Texas, two children: Dale Brownlow (Peggy Snyder) of Midwest City, Okla., and Robert Brownlow (Doreen Moore) of Macomb, Ill.; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren. 38	Thanks to Jason Edwards James Madison (Bud) Brownlow , son of James A. H. Brownlow and Jane Anne Austin, Was born June 1, 1852 in Forsyth Co., Georgia. In about 1855 he moved with his family to Van Wert in Polk Co., Georgia. After his father returned home from war they moved to Bartow Co., Georgia. On May 1, 1879 he married Sarah Elizabeth (Lizzie) Phillips, daughter of James Phillips and Rhoda Martha Collins. She was born Nov. 13, 1861 in Bartow Co., Ga. The story is told that she was born while her father was off fighting for the Confederacy when she was born. One day while her and her mother were in town when a man came walking up the tracks. Her mother looked up and said “Well Lord, yonder comes Jim Phillips”. Soon after that her father died of a sickness he had contracted in the army. She only got to spend a few days with her father. After his death Sarah ,along with her mother and sister, had to survive on their own. They did but it was not with out struggle. The story is told that during reconstruction they would take pine boughs and attach them to the side of their house for shade in the summer. They also worked keeping other peoples houses. James and Sarah started out married life with a one eye stove, a table and crates for chairs. They would tie sacks in the corners of their one roomed house for beds. James and his family grew what they needed to eat and any thing they couldn’t grow they bought. During the World Wars train loads of soldiers would stop in Aragon and the family would take flowers to them. Many of those men went over to Europe and never returned. James was a Mill Supervisor. Every year for Sarah’s birthday her children would throw her a big party which would be attended by sometimes over two hundred people. It was not un common for Governor Talmadge to stop by as well. They would take the furniture out of the house and line the walls with tables of every kind of food imaginable. They would hire local women to do some of the cooking. The main food was a huge pot of stew that was cooked over a fire. There was always plenty at the Brownlow house. James was a member of Prospect Baptist church. His parents' identity is unknown, though it is possible that he was the son of Josiah Hill and Frances Rogers. Another claim says that he was the son of Joseph and Mary Ransom Rogers. Neither of these claims has been documented. Thomas Rogers moved to Georgia from North Carolina and married Asha Everett (1786 - 1850), the daughter of local planter John Everett (1747-1841). Thomas and Asha settled in Bulloch County (now Evans) on a small farm on the forks of the Canoochee River and Lott's Creek, just north of present-day Daisy, GA. Everett's large plantation was located across Lott's Creek. The date, place, and cause of Thomas's death is unknown. According to one family story, Thomas went to Florida in 1830 and never returned, presumed to have been killed by Indians. Thomas was a millwright by trade, so it is expected that he left seeking work. An alternate version of the story says that Thomas took his entire family to Florida to settle on new lands. One evening after a terrible storm, Thomas went outside to check the cattle and never returned. After it was apparent that Thomas was either dead or not returning, Asha moved her family back to Georgia to be with her father. Many years later, Uriah and Ervin received word of a Thomas Rogers who died and left substantial, unclaimed property near present-day downtown Dallas, Texas. Uriah Rogers rode on horseback to Texas to investigate, but he was apparently not convinced that this Thomas Rogers was his father. He returned to Georgia, and the mystery remained unsolved. Thomas and Asha had five known children: Uriah Allen Rogers (1808-1882), Nancy Rogers Hamm (1810 - 1893), William Rogers (born September 5, 1814), Ervin Green Rogers (1818 - 1899), and John Rogers (born May 19, 1820). 40	Obituary Rickie Eugene Mirick, Sr., 72, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2024 at his home. A Gathering of Family and Friends will be Monday, February 12, 2024 at 5:30 pm at The Olive Branch, 215 S. 2nd St. Waco, Texas. He was born on September 26, 1951 in Waco, TX to Eugene (Bud) Jesse Mirick, Sr. and Wanama (Sue) Boen Mirick. Later years he would attend China Spring High School. Rickie worked most of his life as a truck driver. He liked to hunt, fish, travel, but most of all going to the races with his best friend Larry Wills. He is mentioned in his fathers will that was written June 4, 1740. It is believed that the children were named in the order of their birth. In the will John and his sister Jane are placed before James, who was born in 1737, and after William, who is known to have been born in 1727. There fore it is reasonable to assume he was born about 1730. He was born, presumably, in County Armagh, Ireland. Rev. John L. Brown fell asleep in Jesus December 12, 1898 at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Jackson and Eliza T. Brown, near Richland, Navarro County, Tex., where he has been living for the last six years. He was born in Warren county, Tenn., May 5, 1809. He professed religion and joined the M.E.Church, South, at seventeen years of age. At the age of twenty-eight he was licensed to preach, under the presiding eldership of Rev. John Sherrell; was ordained deacon October 17, 1852, by Bishop Joshua Soule, at Pulaski, Tenn; and elder October 24, 1858, by Bishop James Osgood Andrew, at McMinnville, Tenn. He preached for about forty-seven years, and was faithful to all the doctrines and usages of Methodism. Though local, he would often relieve the preachers in charge and go their rounds, while they went home or were sick. In revivals he went far and near. He never fled before the enemy. His preaching was plain, earnest, and practical. Anything that he could not adjust to the word of God was with him but chaff. He was a great lover of the CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE. He was married to Sarah Taylor. To them were born thirteen children. All but four have preceded him. His wife preceded him by ten years to the good world. His firstborn still survives him, though sixty-odd years old. He has thirty-six great-grandchildren, the most of whom live in Texas, where he died. His daughter Eliza and her husband endeavored to make his life pleasant and happy. He offtimes expressed his delight with Texas and the tender care for him the last six years of his life. Often would he say that there was but one thing that troubled him, that was he would rather be buried by his wife at Beech Grove in Alabama. That made but little difference, as he would be with her in heaven. He loved the Texas preachers: Brothers M.B. McKinney, F.M. Winburn, G.J. Irving and others. Our present preacher he never saw, but he held an impressive service at the grave. On the night of his departure, about one o'clock, he held out his hand, and said: "Good-by; don't grieve after me. I am going to a better home over yonder." A few minutes before the last he rose up in bed and told his daughter to fix him a soft pillow to die on. She adjusted the pillow, he lay down on the edge of it, and in a moment said, "Now, Lord, take me easy." and his life was gone. Not a struggle, not a frown; all was over. "Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his."

We, his children, who have cared for him in his last years, want to say to his many friends and relatives, especially in Tennessee, that if we ever meet him again we will have to live in this life above reproach. God help us all so to do!

C.S.A. Jim enlisted 6-29-1861 in Capt. Geo. W. Tuttle's Company, Wigfall Mounted Infantry Reserve Company, Fayette County State Troops (Beat No. 7).

About 1875 Jim went out to cut down a tree in the woods on Criswell Hill. Tom went with him. The tree was half cut through when Jim said he was sick. Tom took him home where he died in a short while, most likely from a heart attack. The old tree is still standing in 1959, and is probably still standing today.

Laura was the daughter of Samuel G. Foster born about 1806 in South Carolina and died between 1880-1900 possibly in Rockdale, Milam, Texas. Laura's mother was Elizabeth Sheppard born Nov 1819 in South Carolina and died about 1900 in Brazoria, Texas.
Laura was married to Robert Sudbury who was born about 1857 in Dyer, Tennessee and died about 1891 in Milam County, Texas.
*Note: Laura's death certificate gives the birth year as 1859, but her headstone says 1857. Hopefully the headstone has the correct year. If anyone has more information on her please contact me. Laura was my great grandmother.

James Carter and Salina Roxanna Dean married 4-27-1836 in Hardeman County, TN. Their first child Wm. Lafayette was born 1837 in Hardeman Co., TN., d.1906. By 1839 James and Salina had gone to Tippah Co., MS where they may have had a son John W. b.1839 d.1850. Also in Tippah Co. they had children Robert M. 1841-?; Mary "Mollie" Charlesann 1844-1911; Sarah Etter 1847-1921; and Emily, b.1849, d.bef.1860. In 1851, the Carters went to Webberville, Travis County, TX where they had the following children: Amanda Roxanna, b.1851-1852, d.1917; Anna Bell 1854-1925; James "Buck" 1856-1930; and Missie Lena 1859-1907. In the late 1860s, James and Salina moved to Waco. All of their grown children also moved to the general Waco area at about that same time. By 1880 James and Salina were living west of Crawford near Tonk Creek.

In 1851 they moved to Webberville, Travis Co. TX, on the Colorado River. at 30°13'51.76"N and 97°30'59.99"W. The 1851 date is supported by Travis County tax records and by a biography of the husband of one of their daughters in an 1892 book. The 1892 source also states that James Carter was a deputy sheriff in Webberville. About 1869 they moved to McLennan County. In 1870 they lived in the town of Waco. By 1880 they had moved southwest of Waco near the Coryell line. The specific community may have been known as Tonk Creek. Their property was just yards southwest of where Tonk Creek crosses High Bridge Road in western McLennan County.

James Carter's early life is as yet unknown. Per the census, he may have been born in North Carolina, South Carolina or Alabama. The 1880 census says he was born in NC and that his parents were born in Virginia. In 1836, Greenberry Carter was the bondsman on James' marriage record in Hardeman County, Tennessee (Note: Greenberry Carter was a son of Jesse Carter of Hardeman Co., Tenn. I do not believe Greenberry was James' father, since G.B. later named another son James. Also, G.B. was too young to have been married when James was born). James married Salina Roxanna Dean April 27, 1836 in Hardeman Co., Tenn. Their first child, William L. Carter, was born there in April 1837. By 1839 they had moved to Tippah County, Mississippi (Greenberry Carter also went to Tippah County). A child John W. Carter may have been born to James and Salina in 1839 in Tippah County. He died in 1850; do not know for certain that he was their child. Their next four children were born in Tippah County: Robert M. 1841, Mary "Mollie" Charlesann Elizabeth 1844, Sarah Etter 1847, and Emily b.1849-50, d.before 1860. In 1851, the Carters moved to Webberville on the Colorado River in Travis County, Texas, where James worked as a wagoner and also served as a deputy sheriff. His next four children were born in Webberville: Amanda Roxanna 1851-52, Anna Bell 1854, James Buchanan "Buck" 1856, and Missie Lena 1859. James' two oldest sons served in the Civil War. About 1869, the Carters (along with all their children) moved to Waco in McLennan County, Texas, where James worked as a wagoner. His daughter Mollie McIlhaney settled in Coryell County. By 1880, James and Salina had moved to a rural area west of Waco, where James farmed on land he owned near Tonk Creek. He passed away on July 15, 1892.
NOTE:
I have never seen an instance where James Carter used a middle initial. He has been confused with a James M. Carter who also lived in Waco.

CLOVIS, N.M. - Bertie Arthur Brownlow, 83, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Lance Clemmons officiating. Arrangements are by Muffley Funeral Home.
Mr. Brownlow was born Dec. 24, 1924, to Bertie and Mary Ditto Brownlow in China Springs, Texas. He married Dolly Wall on Aug. 28, 1944, in Clovis.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Carla Osborne and Ardyth Elms, both of Clovis; a brother, William B. Brownlow of Clovis; two sisters, Mary Ellen Winkles of Clovis and Anita Ruth Griffin of Kent, Wash.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to Building Fund, First Presbyterian Church, 1101 Pile, Clovis, NM 88101.

Based on the scant available evidence, Henry Brownlow was probably born sometime around the year 1490. Although his origins remain elusive, he was definitely located at Biggin in Derbyshire by the 1520s. In the eighteenth year of Henry VIII (1526/7), Henry Brownlow sued William Hall concerning “a commison and evidence of title to lands called the Hallfeld.” The land was located at “Byggyng” near Duffield, Derbyshire.[1] Undoubtedly, the issue with the Halls continued for quite some time as William Hall sued Henry Brownlow in the twenty-eighth year of Henry VIII (1536/7) for “forcible entry and tortuous possession of lands and paster” in Hallfeld.[2]

Henry Brownlow made his will in 1539, and he requested his “Body to be beryed in the church … att kyrkyreton.” From his will, we know his wife’s name was Margaret. She outlived Henry Brownlow and later married Robert Hetheley. Henry Brownlow died in 1539, sometime before October 2 when his estate was inventoried. Based on his will, he was the father of:

1. Robert Brownlow was born about 1508. He died about 1570 in Horsley, Derbyshire. He married Maud.

2. Alan Brownlow was born about 1510. He died about 1549 in London.

3. Thomas Brownlow of Duffield was born about 1512. He died after 1585.

4. William Brownlow of Kirk Ireton was born about 1515. He died in October 1597 in Wirksworth, Derbyshire. He was buried on 1 November 1597 in Kirk Ireton, Derbyshire. He married Elizabeth. She died in 1601 in Kirk Ireton, Derbyshire.

5. Mayor John Brownlow of Nottingham was born about 1517. He died in September 1592 in Nottingham, England. John Brownlow and Anne Roper were married about 1542. Anne Roper, daughter of Thomas Roper and Partridge, was born about 1522. She died in 1589 in Nottingham, England. She was buried in St. Mary’s, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. John Brownlow Anne Arthur were married on 4 August 1589 in St. Mary’s, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Anne Arthur, daughter of Arthur, died in 1623 in Nottingham, England.

Moses "Mose" and Rosie "Grannie" Allen were the parents of Robert Fleming Allen , and the grandparents of his daughter and my grandmother Sarah Ella Allen. He was their only son. Moses was wounded in the Civil War and later died from those wounds in 1902. Rosie was born in 1837 and died in 1931. They came to North Texas from Mississippi in 1890, and Moses died 12 years later.

They actually came via South Carolina: Moses was first known to have been in Monroe County, Georgia in 1850 with his mother Nancy, and his brothers Greenberry (or Green B), Redmond & Jefferson. In all the recorded census records, it says he was born in South Carolina.

As you look at Rosanna (Rosie's) lineage, you will see that although it says she was born in GA, her parents were from SC, and they can be traced particularly to Chester County South Carolina.

This is where it gets interesting....
I found (via Maryland Genealogical) a very old and much over looked manuscript of an Equity Court Case in Chester County SC which named the decendants & heirs of a Richard Allen ca 1735 - 1806. There were names in about 16 pages of the worst handwriting ever decyphered in the whole history of Earth. I would have never looked at Chester County SC ever had it not been for the clerk at the archives in Maryland.....

There were the names of Richard's heirs, some of whom were trying to claim their part of the land which he gave son Elisha who had since died. In it were named the following children: Barnett Allen, James, John, Isaac, William, Chesley, Elijah, Sarah (Sally), Frances, & Nancy - as well as some of their children. Some had died, some had moved "west" and were not heard from since. The date on this record was 1846, and I have to assume the year that Richard's son, Elijah had died.

Chesley was noted to have left the area, leaving his son Emanual. Saying all of this an heir of Emanuel and an heir from Moses exactly match markers in their yDNA samples. Closer than kin than the cousins I know that we are 100% kin to, simply because we visited and broke bread together back in the 1970's......

Anyway, not to get side tracked, I got very excited to find this information, but have not succeeded in getting any other family interested except for the Cassles family, which one of the Allen girls (Frances) married Benjamin Cassles (Castles). Many people on the internet have placed a very strange but undocumented name as Benjamin's wife. Strange but true. I haven't figured out yet why folks post undocumented stuff, and strangely yet why people believe it.....

The connection to Chester County SC was the clenching deal, BUT which son that Nancy was married to remains to be proven. She may have been a daughter-in-law named in the Equity Court Case (Nancy) but I do not believe that is the case, as she (that particular Nancy) was named as Nancy Nabors (Neighbors) in the case. The mother to Moses was definitely Nancy Allen.

John must have been a scoundrel (my 5th ggfather is John) and he got 5 Shillings - Elijah must have been the brains of the family.....

Then Elijah must have died and then the surviving heirs of Richard petitioned the courts for the land to be appraised, sold, and divided.

This is the short version:
John Allen had moved to AL and had not been heard of since.
James had moved from the state - no heirs listed.

Chesley was the father of Emanuel. Chesley moved to either TN or KY about 1815
and took his family except for Emanuel, and had not been heard of since.

Barnett Allen removed to some Western States about 1810 and they have not heard from him since. Barnett Sr is the father of Barnett Jr who is listed as a plaintiff

James Allen removed from the state and has not been heard from since.

Isaac died about 1820 leaving the following children: Richard, Charity, Mary, Barnett, William, Isaac, James and Francis.

Mary married Tillman Whitehead and he abandoned her.
Francis married Berry Hardin and moved west.
Sally Allen married William Rogers and he abandoned her and left the state.

I am not sure about William - I'm sure that he was described in part that was
unreadable.

Dorchester Merrick died at Hookerville Texas,
HOOKERVILLE, TEXAS. Hookerville was on the banks of Hooker Creek on the edge of the Blackland Prairie six miles west of Caldwell, Texas in western Burleson County. Settlement in the county north of the Old San Antonio Road began in the late 1830s. During the 1850s the family of John W. Porter established an extensive plantation on a tributary of Hooker Creek; it became the nucleus of a community called Porter's Chapel. A sawmill operated on Hooker Creek during the early phases of settlement. After the Civil War the Porter's Chapel community became known as Hookerville-named, as was the nearby creek, for an early settler. A post office operated there from 1878 until 1912, after which mail was routed through Chriesman. In 1885 Hookerville reported a population of 130 and a school, a church, a gristmill, and a cotton gin. The town was bypassed by State Highway 21 and the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway. In the late 1980s the Porters Chapel and cemetery and the Liberty Church were still in the area.

At this time I am looking for Porter's Chapel/cemetery. According to the Texas State Handbook, The cemetery is located on County Road 319, near County Road 318.

Mirick, Dorchester H. (I77)

Katie Irene Granberry, 102, of Lockhart married John E. Granberry in 1904 at Yoakum, Texas. The couple moved to Breckenridge in 1918 where she taught in the Breckenridge ISD from 1923-1932. She remained in Breckenridge until 1948 when she moved to Lockhart.

She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Baptist Church.

Survivors: two sons - Herbert S. Granberry of Hurst and Walter E. Granberry of Lubbock; two daughters - Mrs. W.C. Werner of Tyler and Mrs. Roland Kaderli of Austin; a brother - Sumner Powers of Torrance, CA; two sisters - Mrs. A.L. Crownover and Ida Power, both of Corpus Christi; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

In about 1880, Lota's mother Rebecca Karnes Carter joined the Women's Commonwealth, a women's commune in Belton, Texas. The commune was also known as the Sanctified Sisters. Rebecca took her three daughters Lela, Lota and Susie with her to the commune. The commune subsequently moved to Washington D.C. Lota died of typhoid, which she apparently contracted before leaving for D.C.

Lota is buried with her mother and two sisters. The graves are stacked two deep. Lota is in the top grave and her mother beneath. Her other two sisters are in Site 6, with Susie in the top grave and Lela beneath. There may be no markers.

Calvin Eugene Brownlow, 76, of Alamogordo, N.M. died Wednesday morning, Oct. 12, 2016, in his home. Born Oct. 29, 1939, in Waco, Texas, to James Archie Brownlow and Fleda Cockrell. On Dec. 17, 1962, Calvin married his stunning bride, Margaret Ann Lambert at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. A graduate of West High School, Calvin entered the United States Air Force in 1959 and retired in 1979. In 1985, Calvin became a civil servant with the Department of Defense and retired in 2001.

In 2002, Calvin and Margaret moved to Alamogordo where they knew it would be their forever home. Calvin enjoyed volleyball and was an avid sports fan. His love was his wife and the life they lived. He delighted in his RV'ing and traveling the country. His serenity was a cup of coffee and watching the sunrise and sunset from his porch.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Alamogordo, sister, Joann Chesser of Trinity, Texas, two children: Dale Brownlow (Peggy Snyder) of Midwest City, Okla., and Robert Brownlow (Doreen Moore) of Macomb, Ill.; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren.

Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers' and two sisters: Bobby Brownlow, David Brownlow, Mourine Rogers, Linda Gibson and his daily coffee companion Otto.

A Celebration of life will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016, at Alamogordo Funeral Home, 2301 First Street, at 2 p.m.
The burial service will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016, at 1:30 p.m., at the National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Road, Fort Bliss, Texas.

Robert was the son of Dixon and Mary (Carpenter) Naylor. He was born about 1804, probably in Franklin County, Georgia, and lived most of his life in Forsyth County, Georgia. He married Nancy Baker. He died in 1875 in Faulkner County, Arkansas, and is possibly buried in Sharon Cemetery near the Naylor community.

Some researchers erroneously believe his middle name was Dixon because of incorrect info in his son Robert Dixon's 1911 Confederate Veterans' Questionaire. In several other records Robert's middle initial is consistently "H". Plus, Robert already had an older brother named Dixon so it is unlikely that his parents would have named two children using that name.

James Madison (Bud) Brownlow , son of James A. H. Brownlow and Jane Anne Austin, Was born June 1, 1852 in Forsyth Co., Georgia. In about 1855 he moved with his family to Van Wert in Polk Co., Georgia. After his father returned home from war they moved to Bartow Co., Georgia. On May 1, 1879 he married Sarah Elizabeth (Lizzie) Phillips, daughter of James Phillips and Rhoda Martha Collins. She was born Nov. 13, 1861 in Bartow Co., Ga. The story is told that she was born while her father was off fighting for the Confederacy when she was born. One day while her and her mother were in town when a man came walking up the tracks. Her mother looked up and said “Well Lord, yonder comes Jim Phillips”.

Soon after that her father died of a sickness he had contracted in the army. She only got to spend a few days with her father. After his death Sarah ,along with her mother and sister, had to survive on their own. They did but it was not with out struggle. The story is told that during reconstruction they would take pine boughs and attach them to the side of their house for shade in the summer. They also worked keeping other peoples houses.

James and Sarah started out married life with a one eye stove, a table and crates for chairs. They would tie sacks in the corners of their one roomed house for beds. James and Sarah had the following children: George Lester Brownlow b. March 14, 1880, Annie Lee Brownlow b. September 12, 1881, married Hicks Carter December 28, 1907, Rhoda Judson Brownlow b. August 27, 1883, Willie Estelle Brownlow b. April 26, 1886, married Bartow Carter February 25, 1917, Virgil Ephriam Brownlow b. March 1, 1888, and Oliver Johnson Brownlow b. July 8, 1895, married Ethel Briton February 10, 1924.

In about 1900 James moved back to Van Wert. Then in abt 1910 they bought an old white house in Aragon. James and his family grew what they needed to eat and any thing they couldn’t grow they bought. During the World Wars train loads of soldiers would stop in Aragon and the family would take flowers to them. Many of those men went over to Europe and never returned. James was a Mill Supervisor. Every year for Sarah’s birthday her children would throw her a big party which would be attended by sometimes over two hundred people. It was not un common for Governor Talmadge to stop by as well. They would take the furniture out of the house and line the walls with tables of every kind of food imaginable. They would hire local women to do some of the cooking. The main food was a huge pot of stew that was cooked over a fire. There was always plenty at the Brownlow house. James was a member of Prospect Baptist church. He died on Jan 3, 1931 and is buried in the church cemetery{1931 Prospect Church} next to Sarah who passed away on April 15, 1951.

Thomas Rogers (1780 - after 1830) was said to have been born in North Carolina. His parents' identity is unknown, though it is possible that he was the son of Josiah Hill and Frances Rogers. Another claim says that he was the son of Joseph and Mary Ransom Rogers. Neither of these claims has been documented.

Thomas Rogers moved to Georgia from North Carolina and married Asha Everett (1786 - 1850), the daughter of local planter John Everett (1747-1841). Thomas and Asha settled in Bulloch County (now Evans) on a small farm on the forks of the Canoochee River and Lott's Creek, just north of present-day Daisy, GA. Everett's large plantation was located across Lott's Creek.

The date, place, and cause of Thomas's death is unknown. According to one family story, Thomas went to Florida in 1830 and never returned, presumed to have been killed by Indians. Thomas was a millwright by trade, so it is expected that he left seeking work. An alternate version of the story says that Thomas took his entire family to Florida to settle on new lands. One evening after a terrible storm, Thomas went outside to check the cattle and never returned. After it was apparent that Thomas was either dead or not returning, Asha moved her family back to Georgia to be with her father.

Many years later, Uriah and Ervin received word of a Thomas Rogers who died and left substantial, unclaimed property near present-day downtown Dallas, Texas. Uriah Rogers rode on horseback to Texas to investigate, but he was apparently not convinced that this Thomas Rogers was his father. He returned to Georgia, and the mystery remained unsolved.

Thomas and Asha had five known children: Uriah Allen Rogers (1808-1882), Nancy Rogers Hamm (1810 - 1893), William Rogers (born September 5, 1814), Ervin Green Rogers (1818 - 1899), and John Rogers (born May 19, 1820). Very little is known about William and John Rogers. Neither is mentioned in the 1840 will of their grandfather, John Everett, so it is possible that they had died before 1840. The only child mentioned in the will was Ervin, who inherited the entire Everett plantation. Uriah inherited his father's homestead.

Rickie Eugene Mirick, Sr., 72, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2024 at his home. A Gathering of Family and Friends will be Monday, February 12, 2024 at 5:30 pm at The Olive Branch, 215 S. 2nd St. Waco, Texas.

He was born on September 26, 1951 in Waco, TX to Eugene (Bud) Jesse Mirick, Sr. and Wanama (Sue) Boen Mirick. Later years he would attend China Spring High School.

Rickie worked most of his life as a truck driver. He liked to hunt, fish, travel, but most of all going to the races with his best friend Larry Wills. He enjoyed building things out of wood with his little brother Scooter.

Survivors include his children, Rickie Eugene Mirick, Jr., Amanda Mirick, Kristen Mirick, Ashten Mirick, Crystal Mrick, and Heston Mirick; former wife, Dianne Mirick; and several grandchildren.

The exact birth date of John Brownlow, son of James Brownlow, is unknown but it is possible to estimate his birth year. He is mentioned in his fathers will that was written June 4, 1740. It is believed that the children were named in the order of their birth. In the will John and his sister Jane are placed before James, who was born in 1737, and after William, who is known to have been born in 1727. There fore it is reasonable to assume he was born about 1730. He was born, presumably, in County Armagh, Ireland.

The exact year of his immigration to the Colonies is unknown but it was at least prior to 1761 when he was mentioned in the records of Cumberland County, North Carolina, as a merchant and tavern keeper. Sometime after he moved to North Carolina John married Sarah Council. They were the parents on one son, James. Sarah died and John remarried to Rebecca Evans. They were the parents of one daughter, Mary. These were the only children born to John Brownlow. On November 26, 1766, John was made a Justice of the Peace for Cumberland County.

In 1761 he was mentioned in the records of Cumberland County, North Carolina, as a merchant and tavern keeper. Sometime after he moved to North Carolina John married Sarah Council. They were the parents on one son, James. Sarah died and John remarried to Rebecca Evans. They were the parents of one daughter, Mary. These were the only children born to John Brownlow. On November 26, 1766, John was made a Justice of the Peace for Cumberland County.

On April 27, 1767, John Brownlow bought 100 acres in Craven County, South Carolina, where his brother William was moving to from Ireland in December of the same year. In November of 1770 John Brownlow was a Lieutenant in the Cumberland County, North Carolina, Militia. His last recorded land purchase occurred on July 11, 1772, when he bought 50 acres in Cumberland County, North Carolina.

The next record that mentions John Brownlow is an April of 1774 when Arthur Council was made guardian of James Brownlow, John's son. At this time Arthur Council and Rebecca Brownlow were granted letters of administration on the estate of John Brownlow, deceased. It was stated that his negroes be divided between his two children. his widow later married George Fletcher and he was made guardian of Mary Brownlow.

By 1790 George Fletcher had died and Rebecca had the following household:

Rebecca Evans Brownlow Fletcher died Mary 19, 1824, in Cumberland County, North Carolina, and left a will in which she names her grandchildren (Henry E. Purviance, Catharine Fitzharris, and Mary Browblow Tams) and great-grandchildren (Samuel Archibald Purviance, John Strong Purviance, Lawrence Emmet Fitzharris, and Catherine Eleanor Fitzharris). Her only child, Mary Brownlow Purviance, had died on January 23, 1801.
